18 hole course

This advice is written for the player who will be aiming to reach the green in regulation. Between April and June the course can play much harder due to the rough. Players should also take into account the ever present winds on this seaside course.

Hole N°1 Par 5

Easy opening hole but take care with your alignment on the tee which is angled to the right of the fairway. On the left, there is rough ground in a hollow where you can find difficult and sometimes unplayable lies plus new bunkering added in late 2008.

Hole N°2 Par 3

It's usually best to play to the left of the pin position to give an uphill putt. Avoid going too far to the right where there is a huge grassy hollow which can make it tricky to pitch back up onto the green. This green has severe slopes and is the most difficult one on the course.

Hole N°3 Par 4

Short hole but its elevated green makes it hard to judge the second shot.

Hole N° 4 Par 4

Gentle dogleg right played to a very long green (40 yards). The bunkers and thick rough on the right can penalise anyone trying to cut the corner. Play for the centre of the fairway between the 150 yard markers. Depending on where the flag is positioned, club selection for the approach can vary by up to four clubs.

Hole N° 5 Par 4

Difficult dogleg left providing an interesting challenge. Attempting to cut the corner requires a huge drive and there are some well placed bunkers that are not visible from the tee. Take lots of club for your second shot. The bunkers and the mound in front of the green foreshorten the hole but many players come up short here.

Hole N° 6 Par 4

The view here is magnificent – the dunes, the sea and Granville in the distance.  This is a tight hole with punishing rough so it may be better to play a long iron or hybrid club in certain conditions.

Hole N° 7 Par 3

A sporting par 3 with a saucer shaped green. If you play long here, the ball often rolls back to the middle of the green.

Hole N° 8 Par 4

Sharp dogleg left with bunkers positioned to prevent you taking too much off the corner. You play the approach to a split level green surrounded by bunkers. When the flag is at the back, aim to play long.

Hole N° 9 Par 5

Difficult to find the fairway as a straight drive is needed to avoid the out of bounds practice area to the right and the  punishing rough and new bunkers installed in Autumn 2008 in the hollow to the left which separates the 9th and 1st fairways. It’s decision time with the second shot as there are huge cross bunkers 80 yards in front of the green waiting to catch a misplaced fairway wood. Play short and safe for a par!

Hole N° 10 Par 3

A tough hole to start the back nine. The green is raised up and on two levels which makes it very hard to find from the tee. There is a deep bunker in front of the green whilst thick rough lies to either side and beyond. Faced with such a difficult approach, some players play short to leave a simple pitch on and a comfortable bogey. A potential card wrecker!

Hole N° 11 Par 5

Slight dogleg left with a marker post to aim at for the drive. This hole has thick rough either sider all through the year. The green is long enough to allow you to take plenty of club for the approach.

Hole N° 12 Par 3

Long par 3 which is well protected by bunkers to both sides. Play long here.

Hole N° 13 par 4

This and the 15th are the two hardest holes on the course. Long dogleg left with deep, thick rough to both sides. Higher handicap players will treat this as a par 5.

Hole N° 14 Par 5

The locals often talk about the river on the 14th. In fact, there is a small stream 15 yards in front of the green which calls for a good shot in to carry the ball on to the green which is protected by out of bounds behind and to the right. Non-swimmers should take the safe option of playing short and saving par with a chip and putt.

Hole N° 15 Par 4

A long hole with a marker post to aim at from the tee. You need good distance off the tee if you are to get home in two here – otherwise, treat this as a par 5.

Hole N° 16 Par 3

The green here is on top of a steep bank that makes it easy to miss either left or right. Play long and take one or two clubs more than the distance would indicate but don't overdo it as there is no easy leave if you are too long left or right.

Hole N° 17 Par 4

Difficult hole with dogleg to the left. Playing to the left of the marker post calls for a good carry over the well-placed bunker that can’t be seen from the tee. Take care to avoid the deep bunker to the front right of the green.

Hole N° 18 Par 4

Short par 4 with a huge green. If you can carry the drive on to the down slope you will be left with a short pitch in. The green is in full view from the clubhouse terrace..
